The other night I picked up and looked at some Paul Valéry, and was enjoying the Alexandrines when it came to me in a flash that probably, at last, I was capable of understanding Racine. I had never really seen anything in him, really, but had always been ready to admit there must be something there. I opened a book and came in the Fourth Act of Bérénice, where Titus is speaking to himself.

Hé bien! Titus, que viens-tu faire?

Bérénice t’attend. Où viens-tu, téméraire?

Tes adieux sont-ils prêts? T’es-tu bien consulte?

Ton coeur te promet-il assez de crauté?

Car enfui au combat qui pour toi se prépare

C’estpeu d’être constant, ilfaut être barbare…etc.

[Well, there, Titus, what are you doing?

Berenice is waiting for you. Are you timid?

Are your farewells ready? Have you talked

this over with yourself?

Has your heart promised you enough fear?

For since it is for combat you are being prepared at least

It is not enough to be faithful, you must be a beast.]
